By choosing to volunteer with Musselburgh and District Citizens Advice Bureau you’ll be giving something truly valuable back to the community. As a charity, our volunteers are essential to allow us to deliver the important work we do.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to stay active and involved in the local community. Giving people the information and advice they need to turn their lives around is definitely worth getting out of bed for.

As well as making a big difference to people’s lives our volunteers also learn some valuable skills when volunteering with us. 42% of Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers go on to further education or employment. As a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser, you’ll be part of the wider Scottish Citizens Advice network and will have access to ongoing training and development. What can I do for Musselburgh Citizens Advice Bureau?

There are a broad range of volunteering roles available within Musselburgh and District Citizens Advice Bureau, so you can use your knowledge, skills and experience where it matters most. From adviser roles to behind-the-scenes support, or a member of our board. we’ll let you choose where you think you’ll make the greatest impact.  

No matter the role all volunteers will be provided the following:

  • Full initial training
  • Peer to peer support  
  • Regular support and supervision with line manager  
  • Travel and lunch expenses
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities 

Our online training course has achieved SCQF Level 6 credit rated up to 10 credits. Volunteer who undergo our training will be able to earn recognised qualifications. 

Do you have the following skills?

  • IT proficiency
  • An eye for details
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to commit to the role for 6 months 

Then you may be a good fit as an Administration Volunteer. 

Administration is the back bone of helping a bureau run smoothly, as a volunteer admin you could be helping us in some of the following ways:

  • Uploading information onto client database
  • Keeping client records up to date
  • Copy and filing client paperwork
  • Assisting advisers in reviewing cases 

Do you have the following skills? 

  • Good listener and communicator
  • Research and problem-solving
  • Excellent IT proficiency
  • A drive to learn
  • Open-minded and non-judgemental
  • Ability to commit for 6 months*

Then you may be a good fit as a General Adviser. 

General Advisers empower clients to understand their rights and understand what options they have so they can make informed decisions. As a General Adviser you could be helping your local community in the following ways:

  • Conducting appointments - by phone, email or in person
  • Researching advice and options and providing this to clients in clear manner
  • Managing client expectations
  • Ensuring client confidentiality
  • Updating and maintaining case records.
  • Identifying social policy concerns 

 

*As we commit to Scottish National Standard our General Advisers are also required to volunteer 6 hours per week. 

Do you have the following skills?

  • Good IT proficiency
  • Organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to commit to the role for 6 months 

Then you may be a good fit as a Triage Receptionists. 

Triage Receptionist volunteers are the first point of contact for our clients and triage clients to ensure all clients get a consistent service. As a Receptionist you could be helping us in the following ways:

  • Welcoming clients over the phone and in person
  • Gather client information and complete triage assessment
  • Offering basic information when applicable  
  • Managing client expectations
  • Taking messages for advisers
  • Booking and managing client appointments
  • Updating and managing client and case records.
