Self Help Tools

Use a budget planner tool to help you understand:

  • what you’re earning and spending
  • where you might be able to cut costs

The planner will be most useful if you give accurate figures. You can use rough figures if you just want a general idea of your budget.

  • Try to find your most recent:
  • bank statements
  • payslips
  • debit and credit card statements or bills
  • receipts for things you usually pay for in cash

Make sure you include all your expenses, for example money you spend on your partner or family.

You can use the free budget planner on the MoneyHelper website.

Our advisers are unable to give you advice about your private or occupation pension options.

If you are seeking advice about your options or any issues with your private or occupational pension you can book a free appointment with a Pensionwise Adviser.

You can book an appointment online on MoneyHelper or you can call them at 0800 011 3797.

If you need help with tax, you can get advice from the tax charities TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People.

They have online advice and information about the UK tax system. If you’re on a low income, you might be able to get free help from a tax adviser.

You can get help with issues like:

  • checking income tax rates
  • understanding the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system and National Insurance
  • completing your tax return
  • getting tax refunds
  • understanding tax on pensions

TaxAid and Tax Help for Older people can’t help with questions about Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
